The best card ever

“They tell me that you’ll lose your mind when you grow older. What they don’t tell you is that you won’t miss it very much.” And the picture is of four very old and wrinkly ladies at a tea party dressed in witches hats and black cloaks.

Apparently it’s a quote by Malcolm Cowley (1898 – 1989)

I think it’s fantastic. It reminds me of my old Gran who died earlier this year. She was a very quiet lady and she had a very dry sense of humour. She didn’t joke with people if it could be avoided and she rarely told a joke. I wouldn’t call her solemn, but she certainly wasn’t lively and bubbly either.

However, without ever having seen Little Britain and not intending to, she did a perfect impression of the guy in the wheelchair. Gran was actually wheelchair-bound for the last years of her life which made it even better. Mum was up with Gran in her flat and had just given her the dinner and she put out the pudding for her. “Don’t want it” was Gran’s response and she pushed the plate away like a child. “Ok,” mum said, “perhaps you’ll want it later, I’ll put it in the fridge.” “No, don’t want it. Throw it.” “Are you sure you won’t want it later? It’s not a problem keeping it in the fridge.” “No, don’t want it. Throw it.”

So mum bins it. About 30 seconds later….

“Did you throw it? I want some pudding now…” Mum turned around and just looked at her and Gran cracked up in a big smile and said “No, only kidding.”
